CATC Board Members: Nomination

The Canadian Association of Theoretical Chemists (CATC) has a Board of Directors consisting of 6 members. Approximately 12 years ago, when we rewrote, and approved, our By-Laws, membership of the Board was disconnected from the organization of the Canadian Symposium of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (CSTCC). Previously, organizers of this meeting (over a 2 meeting cycle) formed the Board. At the 2024 AGM, we passed a motion to modify the by-laws such that Board members will serve 4 year terms and three new Board members will be elected at each AGM (the AGM takes place every two years at the CSTCC); board members are permitted to stand for re-election to the Board.

Positions on the Board (President, Secretary/Treasurer, etc.) are set by the Board. The current Board is, until 2028, Stacey Wetmore (Lethbridge), Allan East (Regina), and Robert Mawhinney (Lakehead), and, until 2026, Alex Brown (Alberta), Stella Constas (Western), and Erin Johnson (Dalhousie). Thus, we are looking for (up to) three new Board members, although it should be noted that Stella, Erin, and Alex are willing to serve another term if no volunteers come forward. If you would like to volunteer to serve on the Board (for 2026-2030), please contact Alex Brown by June 1, 2026. We will discuss at the 2026 AGM and, if more than three people put their names forward, we will conduct a vote (procedure TBD). Please note that you do not have to be at the 2026 AGM to be on the Board.

What does a Board member do? We discuss business related to the CATC but, in the+past few years, this is primarily discussing conference sponsorship and voting on the CATC Honorary Lectureship. We have previously interacted with Compute Canada (now DRAC) to provide insight/advice regarding national computing and with NSERC about representation on the Evaluation Group committee. Hence, the workload is fairly modest.
