Ilya Ryabinkin (1980-2025)

On December 11, 2025, Dr. Ilya Ryabinkin passed away unexpectedly. While not an academic member of CATC, he was well known to many in the community after working with Viktor Staroverov (Western) and Artur Izmaylov (Toronto). Most recently and for the past seven years, Ilya has been a research scientist at OTI Lumionics pioneering development and applications of quantum computing to quantum chemistry. Ilya was a frequent and valued participant in the University of Waterloo Symposium of Chemical Physics (SCP). In recent years, Ilya developed the Qubit Coupled Cluster (QCC) approach, introducing an innovative use of Pauli words in the context of quantum computing.

His colleagues at OTI Lumionics have started a GoFundMe campaign to support his family. Ilya is survived by his wife and three children. Here is the LinkedIn post by CEO of OTI Lumionics, Michael Helander.
